A little moderation makes for better pictures, and this means that f/2.8 - f/4.0 is plenty. For portraiture, it's too hard to get both eyes in focus with these wide-open settings. Now, this is still true at f/2.8, just a little less so. Depth of field is very shallow, so you need to be extremely careful with your point of focus. In practice, I almost never use f/1.4 because the contrast of the lens is quite low, but it really is terrific at f/2.0. (Although the 50/1.4 at f/2.8 will certainly have less of this chromatic aberration than it shows wide-open.) Example images I've seen taken with the 60mm are very good in this regard. Otherwise, I think the macro is a smart choice. The 50/1.4 has all kinds of problems when you try to use it as a macro with extension tubes: lots of distortion (straight lines are curved) and plenty of chromatic aberration in out of focus areas (green and magenta haze). You won't be able to use it on a full-frame camera. DST ends on Sun, Maat 1:00 am local time, when time in Dublin moves back 0 hour to 2:17 pm. Current time zone for Dublin, Ireland is IST, whose offset is GMT+1. Being a younger photographer, versatility is more important to me than the best lens for a one specific job. I tried to search the forums and did find some information I was looking for, but normally it was just comparing one aspect of the lenses, not their overall versatility. Therefore, those in Dublin will have to make arrangements between 12:00am and 9:00am because these are the typical, 9:00am to 6:00pm, working hours for those in Sydney. Thanks!Īlso, I apologize if this has been asked before. I would love some opinions on what I should get. Also, since both are very close in price, the decision remains difficult. I'm not super picky on the 60mm being too sharp for portraits it's easier to make an image softer than it is to add detail. If I did purchase the macro, I would also use it for portraiture. The low-light shooting and creamy smooth bokeh would both be wondeful, but the 1:1 magnification for macro shots is also very difficult to turn down. I really love the fast glass on the 50mm. The Rebel XTi is a 1.6 crop factor camera, so the full frame equivalents would be 80mm and 96mm respectively. I would like to get a new lens, preferably a nice, walk around prime, but can't pick between the 50mm f/1.4 or the 60mm f/2.8 Macro. I currently own a Rebel XTi with the 18-55mm kit lens and a 100-200mm f/4.5 telephoto lens.
